Recipe Swap: Keto Edition

The Diet Everyone Is Talking About

The ketogenic diet, aka keto diet, has surged in popularity over the past few years as a lose-weight-fast strategy. As with any low carbohydrate diet, the body is forced into a state called ketosis, which is a metabolic process where the body burns fat instead of carbs for fuel.

The diet is composed of mostly fats (75 percent of your daily calories), some protein (20 percent) and a small number of carbs (5 percent).

When your body is unable to get glucose from carbs, your liver converts fatty acids from your diet into ketones, an alternative source of energy.

The keto diet isn’t new- in the 1920s, researchers found that raised levels of ketones in the blood led to fewer epileptic seizures in patients. However, because this way of eating is different from the standard carb-heavy diet, knowing how to get the right balance of nutrition can be a challenge, which is why I’m facilitating a Keto Recipe Swap!

What Do You Eat?

The first question people ask when they hear about the keto diet is ‘what do you eat’? Because the keto diet has such a high-fat requirement, followers must eat fat at each meal. This doesn’t mean I want you packing in the potato chips and pastries!

For a 2,000-calorie diet, requirements typically include 165 grams of fat, 40 grams of carbs, and 75 grams of protein. However, the exact ratio depends on your particular needs. You’ll want to include some unsaturated fats from foods such as nuts (almonds, walnuts), seeds, avocados, tofu, and olive oil. Saturated fats from oils (palm, coconut), lard, butter, and cocoa butter are encouraged in high amounts.

Protein is also important when it comes to building a healthy keto meal. And while carbs should be restricted, low-glycemic fruits such as berries can be enjoyed in limited amounts as long as you’re maintaining a keto-friendly macronutrient range.

One of the most important aspects of a keto meal is avoiding processed foods! This is why a recipe swap can be so useful for getting new meal ideas. Are you in?
